a beautiful gift

I’ve started and deleted this post at least 10 times and I still can’t seem to find the right words.

Tonight, Emily Wilkerson with Smith House Sign Company sent me a photo of the 3 signs she made for me from some of my Pap’s day planner excerpts - and I wept so hard I had to pull the car over! They are absolutely perfect.

My Pap’s day planners are my most prized possessions. I keep them under lock and key. These signs will be proudly (and emotionally) displayed in our home so that I can see them every single day ❤️

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, Emily!! These far exceed my expectations!

awkward dancing

Josh Barlow of Seymour escorted his daughter, Finley, 8, to the dance.

“For me, it’s all about making the evening completely about my daughter,” he said. “Girls Inc. does a great job with this, from the games, snacks and of course, dancing. I think this was my third year taking Finley, so it’s becoming a tradition that I hope she remembers forever. I know I will.”

Despite or because of his dance moves, Finley said she looks forward to spending time with her dad.

“I love going to the Father Daughter Dance because every year, my dad buys me roses and takes me on a date before we go,” Finley said. “My mom does my hair and nails, and I dress up in a fancy dress and feel like a princess.”

Getting to play games is always a highlight, she said.

“I love to play the games. Bingo was my favorite this year, and I won a mermaid doll,” she said. “I even beat my dad at bingo.”
When it comes to dancing, her dad may not have the best moves, but that doesn’t bother Finley.

“My dad dances awkward. Some of his moves are silly,” she said. “But I love to dance slow with him because he can do that good.”

the parent life

Three things life has handed me as a parent this week:

1. Someone introduced my kids to an AC/DC classic while cooking spaghetti and meatballs and now that’s all they sing. And by someone I mean my husband. And by an AC/DC classic I mean Big Balls.

2. Reed tells me his life goal is to be on the bachelor. He’s telling his teacher today.

3. My kids have been re-enacting Roman Colosseum fighting on the trampoline. Yesterday there was almost bloodshed because at some point it stopped being re-enactment.

Happy birthday, Payton!

Fourteen years ago yesterday at about 8pm I was pulling my pants up in the bathroom of my grandparent's house after I relieved my compact baby bladder. I was 16 months and 22 days pregnant (seemed and looked this way) and was in the middle of a hormone filled quest to get a Zesty Chicken Bowl from Taco Bell.

I wanted that bowl more than I wanted worldly riches at that moment. I had begged and begged Josh to get off the couch and take me. With dramatic tears and minute to minute mood swings he finally obliged. (Have you seen a pregnant woman who had been fat most of her life in a craving fueled binge? He really had no choice but to submit to my request.)

When I pulled my pants up I felt it. It wasn't the rush that I expected from watching the Cone Heads, no, it was much different. I knew it was time. My water had broken.

Fearing that I wouldn't be able to get Taco Bell I told absolutely no one. I slapped on a Playtex overnighter and headed out to Taco Bell for my last ride as a pregnant woman.

It was go hard or go home at this point.

It wasn't until we returned, my belly was full and my cravings were satisfied that I confessed to Josh what had happened. With both of us super nervous for this new chapter of life we left shortly after to make the trek to the hospital that would change our lives forever.

After 16 hours of hard labor and one emergency C-section later I fell in love for the very first time.

Our new baby girl was so absolutely beautiful. Her hair was so long. Her cheeks were so chunky. Her skin was so soft. Her tiny toes and fingers were so sweet.

She was perfect. I was in love; Love like I had never loved before. A mother’s love.

At that exact moment in my life nothing else mattered anymore - not even the regret from the $20 Taco Bell order hours before.

And today, 14 years later, she is still perfect.

Ya’ll. Her heart is so big. She genuinely cares about everyone and everything. She always helps without any hesitation and she is the best role model to her little sister and brother.

We couldn’t have painted a more perfect first born if we tried.

I am so proud of the young lady she is becoming and one of the characteristics that I admire most about Payton is that she is so respectful. In a world where entitlement is misconstrued and respect is long forgotten about, she is the total opposite. She makes me proud, SO proud.

Here’s to wishing my beautiful Payton a very happy 14th birthday.

She’s almost my DD!

and so it begins

Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3.

Welcome to Barlow, Party of 5.

This blog is inspired by a thriving teenager (and by thriving I mean dark room dwelling, phone staring, Air Pod wearing recluse), an 8 year old with a permanent rbf and a serious case of elderly idgaf, a free spirited  6 year old (not always within family compliance, policies and guidelines) and a husband with a love for all things manly.

Sprinkle that with 3 giant lab dogs, 3 mice, a chameleon and an over stressed mom and alas you have it...
